Leifing Castle, also known as Eberwein Castle, is a charming manor in the municipality of Neuhaus, sitting just 300 metres from the Slovenian border. It's a great little stop for anyone exploring Carinthia's borderlands and looking to mix a walk with some history and architecture.
The three-storey building on a rectangular plan traces its roots back to the 15th-16th century, though its current baroque appearance dates from the first half of the 18th century. A tall hipped roof, a rusticated ground floor and pilaster-articulated upper storeys give it an elegant, noble character. The castle sits within a park bordered by a game enclosure, making it a pleasant place for a relaxed stroll after a day on the trails.
How to get thereInside, several upper rooms preserve elaborate 18th-century stucco work, and a room above the entrance hall features coat-of-arms frescoes of the Stampfer, Thurn and Mohrenschildt families - a nice glimpse into the region's noble history.
