The Saxonia Fountain is one of Chemnitz's most charming historical monuments, finally restored to its rightful place in the city centre after decades of turbulent history. It is not a typical hiking destination, but a wonderful spot for a city walk before or after exploring the Ore Mountains.

The fountain now stands on Johannisplatz in Chemnitz, surrounded by urban architecture and greenery. The atmosphere shifts throughout the day - peaceful in the morning, and in the evening the bronze figures take on a special glow under the lights. It is a favourite meeting and resting spot for locals and visitors exploring the city.

How to get there

• Chemnitz city centre — walk from the main train station, approx. 15-20 minutes, easy, fully urban route
• By tram directly to a stop near Johannisplatz

Fun fact: the original bronze figures were melted down for war materials in 1941, and it took until 2013 for Polish artists to recreate them faithfully based on old photographs.
