On the slope of Mount Uklejna, high above the banks of the Raba River, lie the mysterious remains of a medieval tower known as Zamczysko. This is a spot for those who enjoy combining a forest walk with a touch of history — instead of standing walls, you will find stone blocks scattered across the hillside, remnants of a cylindrical tower blown up under circumstances still unknown.

The former castle grounds are now thickly wooded, giving the place a slightly mysterious, secluded atmosphere, especially in autumn and early spring when mist drifts over the Raba valley. The whole area is protected as the Zamczysko nad Rabą landscape reserve, so a walk here also means encountering a small but valuable patch of nature. The views over the river valley and surrounding hills reward even a short climb.

How to get there

• Myślenice — short climb on a path up the slope of Mount Uklejna, approx. 20-30 minutes, easy route
• Possible start from nearby hamlets along local trails running along the Raba River

• The ruins lie at an elevation of about 380 m above sea level
• The area is protected within the Zamczysko nad Rabą landscape reserve (1.35 ha)
• Only fragments of a stone tower from the 13th/14th century remain of the castle

It's worth knowing that the poet Mikołaj Rej once stayed at the castle and reportedly wrote his famous work here — today it's hard to believe that this quiet, wooded corner once hosted a medieval watchtower guarding the trade route from Kraków to Hungary.
