Königstein Fortress is one of the largest hilltop fortresses in Europe — a breathtaking stronghold rising 240 metres above the River Elbe, right in the heart of the Saxon Switzerland region. It was never conquered in battle, and today it welcomes visitors as a living open-air museum with over 50 historic buildings spanning nearly 400 years of history.

The rocky plateau covers 9.5 hectares and is enclosed by walls up to 42 metres high, with sheer sandstone cliffs completing the natural defences. In summer the fortress buzzes with historical spectacles and outdoor events, while autumn wraps the ancient stonework in drifting mist, giving it an almost otherworldly atmosphere. In winter the dramatic silhouette against the surrounding sandstone landscape is equally unforgettable. A fun piece of history: in 1848 a chimney sweep named Sebastian Abratzky climbed the sheer sandstone walls through a rock crevice. The 'Abratzky Chimney' he discovered can still be climbed today — though since crossing the walls is forbidden, you must abseil back down just before the top.
