Museum Liaunig in Neuhaus is one of Austria's most striking private contemporary art museums - a place where raw concrete-and-steel architecture meets an outstanding collection of post-war Austrian art. It's not just a gallery, but a genuine architectural experience set into the Carinthian landscape.
The building is largely embedded into a hillside, so from outside only sections protrude beyond the slope, including a viewing terrace stretching toward the main road. Inside, visitors are greeted by a striking 160-metre-long tunnel-like hall, lit by natural skylights along most of its length. In summer the cool concrete interiors offer welcome relief from the heat, while in winter the industrial character of the building takes on a stark, contemplative mood. It's a great stop for anyone combining a trip through Carinthia with art and architecture.
