Medija Castle is a haunting ruin steeped in legend, tucked away near the quiet settlement of Podlipovica. This is reputedly the final resting place of Johann Weikhard von Valvasor, the celebrated polymath who spent his childhood within these very walls, as the estate once belonged to his parents.
Little remains of the castle's former grandeur today - it was destroyed, along with its stables, by Yugoslav Partisans during World War II. Yet the restored castle chapel keeps the spirit of the place alive, hosting concerts, plays, and weddings throughout the year. The surrounding landscape offers a peaceful setting for a walk, with the atmosphere of the ruins shifting beautifully with the seasons - lush and green in summer, atmospheric and misty in autumn.
