The Mariengrotte is a small but remarkable grotto on the slopes of the Falkenstein, officially recognized as a valuable geotope by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment. It's a rewarding stop for hikers curious about the geological story behind these mountains, not just the views.

The surrounding landscape is classic Allgäu Alps terrain - rocky slopes, sweeping views over the Vilstal valley and the peaks of the Tannheim Group. Nearby stands the ruined Falkenstein Castle, which King Ludwig II once planned to rebuild into a grand palace. In summer the area draws plenty of hikers, while in winter the paths can be snow-covered and require extra care.

How to get there

• Pfronten - trail leads toward the Burghotel Falkenstein and Berghotel Schlossanger Alp, both reachable by a small access road; continue on foot to the grotto and castle ruins, difficulty: moderate
• Driving partway to one of the hotels shortens the approach on foot
