Hollókő Castle stands proudly on a rocky outcrop in the Cserhát Hills, right next to the UNESCO-listed Palóc village of Hollókő. It's one of Hungary's best-preserved medieval castles, and a place where history truly comes alive — costumed knights still patrol its walls.

Perched roughly 400 meters up, the castle offers sweeping views over the rolling Cserhát hills and the picturesque rooftops of the village below. In summer, the fortress buzzes with historical reenactments and knightly tournaments; in autumn, the surrounding woods blaze with color; and in winter, mist often wraps the ruins in an almost fairytale atmosphere. Whatever season you visit, the castle has its own distinct charm.

How to get there

• From Hollókő village — short walk up, easy trail, suitable for most visitors
• Parking available near the village entrance, with a path leading up to the castle

• Open to visitors since 1996
• Following renovations in 2014-2015, the main keep, captain's quarters, kitchen, forge and armory are all open
• Visitors can try out medieval weapons — bow, crossbow, battle axe and spear
• Members of the Order of Knights of St. Ladislaus, in period costume, guide visitors around

Legend has it that Máté Csák once hid his treasure right here, and later the Ottomans stored looted gold in the same spot — yet despite countless attempts, no treasure hunter has ever found it.
