Děčín Castle is one of the most striking historic landmarks in northern Bohemia — a proud fortress perched on a sandstone cliff above the confluence of the Elbe and Ploučnice rivers. With over seven centuries of layered history, gorgeous baroque gardens and a surprising Chopin connection, it is far more than just another Czech castle.

The castle commands sweeping views over the wide Elbe valley and the forested hills of Bohemian Switzerland beyond. Each season brings its own charm: the rose garden blooms beautifully in early summer, the shaded terraces offer cool refuge in the heat, and autumn drapes the surrounding sandstone landscape in warm golden colours. The atmosphere here feels genuinely lived-in and layered — you can almost sense the echoes of Swedish sieges, Prussian occupations and aristocratic soirées all at once.

In 1835, Frédéric Chopin visited the castle and composed his Waltz in A-flat major, Op. 34 — known as the 'Děčín Waltz' — dedicating it to Countess Josefína of Thun-Hohenstein. That romantic chapter alone makes a visit feel wonderfully special.
