Csesznek Castle is one of the most striking medieval fortresses in the Bakony Mountains, perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop above the village of Csesznek. It's a place where centuries of Hungarian history come alive, from Tatar invasions to Ottoman sieges and baroque transformations.

The castle's rugged silhouette dominates the surrounding hills, surrounded by the forests of Bakony that turn golden in autumn and quiet and white in winter. From its walls you get sweeping views over the valley below, and the whole site carries an atmosphere of centuries past, when noble Hungarian families like the Garai and Esterházy shaped its fate.

How to get there

• Csesznek village (parking nearby) - easy access, about 15-20 minutes on foot, easy difficulty
• The castle sits right beside road 82 between Győr and Zirc, making it easy to reach by car

Practical information

• The castle is easily accessible and open to visitors, with an entrance fee
• Hungary's first via ferrata routes opened near the castle in summer 2013, with grades ranging from C (medium) to the demanding E-grade Tálos Zoltán memorial route
• Since 2017 the castle has been undergoing restoration as part of Hungary's National Castle Program

Fun fact: in 1947 the exterior scenes of the famous Hungarian film Somewhere in Europe were filmed here, and legend still tells of Captain Wathay, who died in 1573 when a celebratory cannon shot exploded in his hands.
