Khislstein Castle is a striking reminder of Kranj's layered past, perched on a former defensive spur above the crossing of the Sava River. It's a place where centuries of history blend into one distinctive silhouette.

The castle overlooks the river and the town bridge, offering views over Kranj's old town and the Sava valley. The surroundings are urban, yet the building itself retains a rugged, fortress-like character, especially striking in autumn and winter when mist rises from the river below.

Practical information

• The original defensive tower dates back to 1256 (the Ortenburg tower)
• The castle took its current form after Baron Janž Khisl purchased it in the mid-16th century
• The building was renovated in 1952 according to plans by architect Jože Plečnik

Over the centuries the castle passed through several noble families - the Mosconis, Ravbars, Apfaltrers and Auerspergs - before its last private owner, Natalis Pagliaruzzi.
