The Țarcu Mountains are one of Romania's best-kept secrets — a wild, largely untouched corner of the Southern Carpathians where you can hike for hours without meeting another soul. Think broad alpine meadows, glacial cirques, and rivers so clear they look like liquid glass.

The massif forms a rough triangle, with its main ridge running northeast to southwest. The landscape shifts beautifully as you climb: dense forests give way to open highland plateaus levelled by millennia of erosion, sitting at 2000–2200 m. These ancient erosion surfaces — geologists call the highest one the 'Borăscu surface' — give the ridges a spacious, almost plateau-like feel, unlike the jagged peaks you might expect. Snow lingers in the glacial cirques well into summer, and the wind on the summit of Țarcu peak blows hard from north and south nearly year-round.

• Căleanu (2196 m) — the highest point in the massif, with sweeping views across the Southern Carpathians
• Țarcu (2190 m) — the namesake summit, gateway to the neighbouring Godeanu Mountains
• Pietrii (2162 m) — a scenic peak on the western section of the main ridge
• Muntele Mic (1802 m) — the westernmost sub-massif, the most accessible and well-equipped for visitors

• Best season: June–September — trails fully open, wildflower meadows at their best
• Base towns: Caransebeș, Bucova, Poiana Mărului
• Trail difficulty: moderate to challenging — long approaches, sparse signage in places; prior hiking experience recommended
• Getting there: car is the most practical option; from Caransebeș follow the Timiș valley or head via Bucova; local buses serve the foothill villages

A surprising fact: above 1500 m, snow can fall at any time of year — the first flurries sometimes arrive as early as late August, so always pack a warm layer even on a summer trip.
