The Via Romea is one of Europe's oldest pilgrimage routes, first documented in 1236 when Abbot Albert of Stade traveled it on his journey to Rome. The 82.7 km Austrian section carries hikers through the heart of Tyrol, blending centuries of history with alpine scenery.
The route passes through Seefeld in Tirol, Zirl, Innsbruck and finishes in Matrei, tracing the footsteps of medieval pilgrims heading south toward Rome. Along the way, expect alpine valleys, traditional Tyrolean towns, and open views of the surrounding mountains. The trail is marked with the colour #3182ce.
Difficulty and TerrainWalking this trail means literally retracing the steps of pilgrims who crossed these valleys nearly 800 years ago on their way to meet the Pope in Rome - a rare chance to walk through living history.
