The Meran High Trail is one of South Tyrol's most iconic long-distance routes, circling the entire Texel Group massif and rewarding hikers with sweeping views over the Meran basin, the Adige Valley, Vinschgau, Passeier and Schnals valleys. It's a true journey through four valleys and dozens of centuries-old mountain farms.
Marked as trail No. 24 (marking colour: #e53e3e), the route splits into a longer southern section - gentler and running below the treeline - and a shorter, more demanding northern section that climbs into high-alpine terrain up to nearly 3000 m. Along the way you'll pass through mountain forests, alpine meadows and heather-covered highlands, alongside historic Schwaighöfe farmsteads and staffed mountain huts. The lowest point is the Gruberhof in the Kalmtal valley (839 m), while the highest is the Eisjöchl saddle (2895 m).
Difficulty and terrainOpened in 1985 after nearly ten years of construction, the trail was conceived as a 'ribbon of friendship from farm to farm, from village to village, from valley to valley' - and it remains one of the defining hikes of South Tyrol today.
