Samotnia is one of the oldest and most atmospheric mountain huts in Poland, tucked away in the glacial cirque of Mały Staw (Small Lake) in the Karkonosze mountains. With roots stretching back to the 17th century and a setting that feels almost otherworldly, it is the kind of place that makes you want to linger far longer than planned.

The first recorded mention of a shelter by Mały Staw dates to 1670, when a Wrocław scholar described meeting an elderly mountain guardian who kept trout and goats — and firmly refused to ever descend to the valley. Some places just have that effect on people.
