Nestled in the upper reaches of Kościeliska Valley in the Western Tatras, the PTTK hut at Hala Ornak is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and stay a little longer. Sitting at 1100 m above sea level, surrounded by strictly protected forest, it combines genuine mountain character with cosy hospitality — and yes, they hand out free boiling water to every hiker who walks through the door.

The hut is built in the classic Zakopane style and offers wonderful views from its windows towards Kominiarski Wierch, Bystra and Błyszcz peaks. In summer the valley is lush and peaceful; autumn paints it in deep golds; and in winter, horse-drawn sleighs replace the highland carriages on the snowy track. Whatever the season, there is a warmth here that goes beyond the dining room.

The hut was built in 1947–48 to replace the former shelter at Hala Pyszna, which was burned down by German forces during World War II. In 1973 it was named after Professor Walery Goetel, and the commemorative plaque on the building was designed by the celebrated Kraków sculptor Bronisław Chromy — look for it near the entrance.
