Schronisko pod Wagą is the highest mountain hut in the entire High Tatras — and the moment you arrive, you understand why it feels so special. Perched at 2,250 m above sea level, just 90 vertical metres below the Waga Pass, it offers a genuine high-alpine refuge with an atmosphere you simply won't find anywhere else in the range.

The landscape here is raw and dramatic: rocky ridges, scree slopes and sweeping views across the Slovak side of the Tatras greet you from every angle. The hut is open only during the summer season, from 1 June to 31 October, so timing your visit matters. Everything you eat and drink here arrives on a porter's back — they haul 60 to 100 kg (sometimes more) along a 4.5 km route with 750 m of elevation gain. That alone makes every meal feel well-earned.

Built in 1932, the hut has been repeatedly battered by avalanches — most severely around 2000–2001 — and was completely rebuilt and reopened in 2013. The all-time carrying record on the supply route belongs to Jakub Kaczmarek from Poland, who once hauled an astonishing 125 kg in a single carry.
