Tamar Mountain Hut sits at 1108 m at the entrance to the Tamar valley, in the upper part of the Planica Valley. This is the gateway to some of the finest peaks in the Julian Alps — from here, trails lead to Mojstrovka, Jalovec and the Rateče Ponce, and the hut also serves as a base for climbers tackling the north face of Travnik.

The setting is dramatic and peaceful at once — nearby is the spring of the Nadiža river, which soon disappears underground only to resurface at Zelenci as the source of the Sava Dolinka. Along the trail to Sleme, just 30 minutes from the hut, you'll find the Črna voda waterfall, well worth the short detour. In summer the valley is lush and alive with the sound of water, while in winter it's ringed by snow-capped peaks of the Karavanke and Julian Alps.

• From Rateče (Kranjska Gora) — approx. 6 km, easy route
• From the Planica ski jumps — approx. 1h walk

The hut's history dates back to 1899, and the current building was converted from a shepherd's cabin in 1936. Renovated repeatedly over the decades, it remains one of the best-placed bases for exploring the heart of the Julian Alps.
