Murowaniec is one of the most iconic mountain huts in the Polish Tatra Mountains — a sturdy stone building sitting at 1500 m above sea level on the sweeping Hala Gąsienicowa alpine meadow. Nearly a century old and still going strong, it is the perfect base camp for exploring the heart of the Tatras, with trails fanning out in every direction.

The setting is simply spectacular. The wide-open meadows of Hala Gąsienicowa are ringed by dramatic Tatra peaks, and the views shift beautifully with the seasons — wildflowers and sparkling mountain lakes in summer, fiery colours in autumn, and a wonderfully peaceful snowscape in winter. The hut itself is a listed historic monument, built between 1921 and 1925 and officially opened by Polish President Stanisław Wojciechowski — so there is real history under that stone roof.

• Prime starting point for the famous Orla Perć ridge trail (via Krzyżne pass or Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy lake)

Look out for the memorial plaque dedicated to poet Adam Asnyk at the entrance — placed here in 1929, it is a lovely reminder that the Tatras have inspired great art as well as great adventures.
