At the far end of the remote Umbal Valley, beneath the Vorderes Umbaltörl, sits one of the most rugged shelters in the Hohe Tauern range. The Kleine-Philipp-Reuter-Hütte is a tiny self-catering bivouac hut for hikers seeking true high-mountain solitude.

The setting is wild and dramatic — the Umbalkamm rises to the west, the Maurerkamm to the east, and the Roßhufkamm to the north. This is a landscape of glaciers, scree and rock, with sweeping alpine views in summer, while in winter the hut becomes completely inaccessible. It's a place for those who value raw mountain character over comfort.

The hut is named after Philipp Reuter, long-time chairman of the Essen section, and the site has already survived two avalanches that destroyed earlier huts built on the same foundation.
