Mitterastensee is a small alpine lake tucked away at 2228 m above sea level in the heart of the Goldberg Group. Though modest in size — just 90 m long and 40 m wide — it offers a peaceful, untouched setting that feels far removed from the busier trails of the region.
The lake sits on the eastern slopes of the Gasteiner Höhe, between the peaks of Mitterastenkopf (2401 m) and Kalkbretterkopf (2412 m). It has the character of a natural, shallow pond with flat shores, and a small fen stretches along its southern bank. The surrounding landscape is classic high-alpine terrain — sparse vegetation, rocky slopes, and open views toward neighboring summits. In summer the area attracts hikers seeking quiet, scenic walks, while in winter and spring access becomes far more limited due to mountain conditions.
