Hridsko Lake, known as the 'lake of happiness', is one of the most beautiful lakes in Montenegro, tucked away in the Prokletije mountains at almost 2000 meters above sea level. Its crystal-clear water and the local belief that bathing in it brings health and marital happiness make it a magnet for travelers seeking something beyond scenery alone.

The lake stretches about 300 meters in length and 160 meters in width. In summer it reaches a depth of around five meters, while during the rest of the year it grows considerably deeper due to rainfall and melting snow. In winter, a thick layer of ice covers its surface, giving the place a stark yet strikingly beautiful character. Surrounded by the peaks of Prokletije, the silence and untouched nature make this a spot worth lingering at, whatever the season.

How to get there

• From Plav — by forest road, though it is better to walk the final stretch on foot, as snow often damages the road surface

Local tradition holds that as you leave the lake, you should toss a piece of jewelry into the water while thinking of your wish — said to bring good luck.
