The Großer Alpsee is a genuine highlight of the Allgäu region - a natural lake covering nearly 250 hectares, cradled by the gentle peaks of the northern Allgäu Alps. Whether you come for sailing, walking or simply soaking in the mountain views, this lake has a way of drawing you back.

Set in the wide, east-running Konstanzer Tal valley, the lake catches the prevailing westerly winds perfectly, making it one of the best sailing and windsurfing spots in the region. In summer, its shores buzz with swimmers and boats; in autumn the surrounding slopes turn golden; and in winter, hardy locals take to ice swimming in its cold waters. The nearby Nagelfluhkette Nature Park frames the lake with its distinctive ridges, and just west of the main basin lies the smaller Teufelssee, a quiet remnant of the lake's larger ancient form.

• Bühl am Alpsee - starting point on the eastern shore, close to beaches and the campsite

Practical information

• The Buchloe-Lindau railway line runs directly along the northern shore
• Swimming spots are found at three locations: southwest, southeast and east shore, where a campsite is also located
• Since 2003, one-hour boat tours aboard the traditional lädine Santa Maria Loreto have run through the summer season
• The lake is owned by the state of Bavaria and managed by the Bavarian Administration of State Palaces, Gardens and Lakes

Since 1983 the lake has hosted the Allgäu Triathlon, one of Germany's most storied triathlon events, and in winter, thrill-seekers have even set world records here in ice triathlon.
