Abisso Città di Udine is one of the most intriguing caves within the Col Lopic complex, hidden deep in the limestone plateaus of the Monte Canin massif. This is a destination for serious caving enthusiasts rather than casual hikers - its connection to the rest of the cave system remains an unsolved mystery for researchers.
Col Lopic is a rugged, rocky limestone terrain in the Julian Alps, concealing 34 caves discovered so far beneath its surface. The surface landscape shows classic karst features - limestone plateaus, sinkholes and fissures typical of this alpine region. In summer the area is accessible to experienced hikers and cavers, while in winter snow cover makes the approach considerably harder and more hazardous. The surrounding Monte Canin massif offers the rugged alpine scenery characteristic of the Friuli mountains.
How to get there
Practical information
For decades the Col Lopic area has attracted cavers from the Circolo Speleologico ed Idrologico Friulano and other associations, who continue piecing together the secrets of this underground labyrinth, whose passages now total around 2,800 meters in length.
