The Mecsek is a green, forested mountain range rising just above the city of Pécs in Southern Hungary. It's a place where Mediterranean-like flora meets a Balkan-influenced climate, offering an easy escape into nature without straying far from a lively university town.

The landscape is made up of gentle, thickly wooded hills cut through by ravines, rocky outcrops and south-facing vineyards. Trails wind past abandoned uranium mines, medieval monastery ruins and viewpoints that stretch toward the Danube lowlands and Croatia. The vibe here is relaxed and low-key — perfect for day hikes rather than multi-day treks.

Highlights:

• Zengő (682 m) — the highest peak, with a lookout tower and views across the whole range
• Jakab-hegy — scenic rock formations and ruins of a medieval monastery on top
• Misina-tető — the peak closest to Pécs, topped with a TV tower and viewpoint
• Tubes — a favorite short walk right above the city

Under Ottoman rule the mountain was known as Ferava, and beneath its slopes lie rich deposits of limestone, coal and uranium ore that once powered the local economy.
