Zvolen (1,402 m a.s.l.) is one of the most rewarding summits in the Veľká Fatra range — an open, treeless peak that offers a sweeping 360-degree panorama and is surprisingly easy to reach. Perched above the popular resort of Donovaly, it is the kind of mountain that delivers big views without demanding too much in return.

The summit belongs to the 'hôľnatý' type — broad, grassy and almost free of vegetation — so nothing blocks the views in any direction. On a clear day you can pick out the ridge of the Low Tatras, and with a little luck also Sitno, Poľana, Veľký Choč and the iconic silhouette of Kriváň. In summer the slopes are carpeted with alpine meadows; in winter they become a quiet, snow-covered plateau crossed by marked cross-country ski trails. The legendary 'Cesta hrdinov SNP' — the Path of the Slovak National Uprising Heroes — runs right over the top, one of the longest marked hiking routes in Central Europe.

• A cable car from Donovaly runs to the neighbouring Nová hoľa peak, making it easy to combine both summits in a single outing.
• Zvolen sits just outside the Veľká Fatra National Park boundary, but falls within the buffer zone of the Low Tatras National Park.
• The summit lies on the watershed between the Váh and Hron river basins.

That watershed position is a neat geographical curiosity — rainwater falling on the western slopes eventually reaches the Baltic Sea via the Váh, while water from the southern slopes flows into the Hron and on to the Black Sea.
