The Wagensonnriegel is a 959-metre rocky ridge tucked into a small side range of the Bavarian Forest, close to the villages of Rinchnach, Kirchdorf im Wald and Frauenau. It's a well-loved local summit, crowned with a tiny chapel, a summit cross and a few benches inviting you to sit and take in the view.

The atmosphere here is peaceful and distinctly Bavarian — rocky outcrops rise gently above dense forest, giving a real sense of remoteness despite the modest elevation. From the top, views stretch south and west toward the nearby Gsengetstein and the village of Rinchnach below. In spring and summer, the surrounding woods are lush and green; autumn brings golden colours to the forest, while winter transforms the area into a quiet, snow-covered landscape perfect for a slower pace.

• Starting from Kohlau — marked trail, easy to moderate difficulty
• Alternative starting points: Zimmerau, Frauenau, Althütte, Klingenbrunn or Waldhaus

Interestingly, between 2014 and 2015 the Wagensonnriegel became the centre of a heated debate over wind turbine plans — proposals from Munich's municipal utility company and a local energy cooperative sparked strong local opposition, and residents ultimately voted down the projects, keeping this quiet corner of the Bavarian Forest untouched.
