Veľký Javorník (1,072 m a.s.l.) is the highest peak of the Javorníky mountain range, straddling the Slovak-Czech border region. With its open, meadow-covered summit and sweeping panoramas, it is one of those mountains that rewards you well beyond the effort of getting there.

The summit ridge is largely free of forest, which means unobstructed views in almost every direction. On a clear day you can spot the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, the Malá Fatra range, and — if conditions allow — the distant summits of the Hrubý Jeseník, the Silesian Beskids and the Strážovské vrchy. The peak sits at the boundary of the Žilina and Trenčín regions, and its summit is the meeting point of three districts: Čadca, Bytča and Považská Bystrica. Each season brings its own character: spring wildflowers, summer breezes at altitude, and spectacular autumn colours in the surrounding forests.

• The north-eastern slope is home to the Veľký Javorník nature reserve; please stay on marked trails in that area.
• Several mountain huts and shelters are available near the summit and around the nearby Kasárne recreation centre.
• The ridge forms the watershed between the Váh and Morava river systems — streams on the northern slopes flow toward Moravia.

Interestingly, the state border runs roughly half a kilometre west of the summit itself, so the peak and its ridge are entirely on Slovak territory — a small geographical curiosity that adds to the charm of this cross-border corner of the Western Carpathians.
