Tlstý javor (1,068 m a.s.l.) is a quiet, rewarding summit tucked into the heart of the Veporské vrchy mountains in central Slovakia, just 12 km south of Brezno. It sits along the main ridge of this lesser-known range and offers a genuinely peaceful hiking experience away from the crowds.

The summit itself is cloaked in dense forest, so don't expect a panoramic view from the very top — but step onto any of the wide mountain meadows on the slopes and the reward is immediate. From these open pastures you can take in the surrounding peaks of the Veporské vrchy, the Low Tatras, the Spiš-Gemer Karst, and the Poľana massif. The meadows are actively grazed by cattle and sheep throughout the warmer months, giving the landscape a timeless, pastoral feel. Autumn brings golden hues to the hillsides, while spring turns everything a vivid, fresh green.

Road II/529 connecting Hriňová and Brezno passes through the Tlstý javor saddle on the eastern flank, making it easy to reach the trailhead by car.

The area drains into the Hron river basin — the Kamenistý stream rises on the southern slopes and the Korytársky stream on the northern side, both flowing into the Čierny Hron river. A small but satisfying detail that connects every step of your hike to the wider landscape of central Slovakia.
