The Teufelstisch (901 m) is a legend-shrouded rock formation near Bischofsmais in the central Bavarian Forest, and one of the region's most popular hiking destinations. This small but striking ridge of rock rewards hikers with dramatic views and even offers a few pitches for climbers looking for a challenge.

The trail follows a rocky ridge crest, opening up to beautiful views over the surrounding hills of the Bavarian Forest at every turn. The terrain demands sure-footedness, especially along the exposed sections of the ridge, but the reward is a landscape of striking rock formations and a sense of quiet remoteness. In spring and summer the surrounding forests glow green, in autumn the ridge is framed by colorful foliage, and in winter frost dusts the rocks, giving the whole scene an even more mysterious character.

How to reach the summit

• Bischofsmais — trail leads up to the Teufelstisch, requires sure-footedness, moderately demanding
• From the ridge, descend either towards Habischried or Tiefenried once you reach the trail junction
• The hike combines well with the neighboring Geißkopf peak

Practical information

• Several routes lead to the actual Teufelstisch rock — the normal route is graded II+ and only takes a few moves to climb
• Two additional, harder routes graded IV and IV+ are found on the south side
• The summit ridge is designated a valuable geotope by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (geotope no. 276R010)

The name Teufelstisch (Devil's Table) is no accident — this striking rock formation has long been surrounded by local legends, adding an extra layer of mystery to the place.
