Smrekov (1441 m a.s.l.) is a rewarding peak in Slovakia's Veľká Fatra range, where dense spruce forest gives way to a grassy ridge with open, sweeping views. It's the kind of summit that feels like a genuine discovery — quiet, unspoiled, and with a simple mountain shelter right at the top.

The peak sits on the eastern ridge of Krížna and acts as a junction point, with side ridges separating the Gaderská and Dedošová valleys. Most of the slopes are forested, creating a wonderfully sheltered walk in summer and a snow-hushed trail in winter. The southeastern ridge breaks into open grassland near the summit, revealing the broader Veľká Fatra landscape in all directions.

How to reach the summit

• Blatnica (village) → Blatnicka dolina → Juriášova dolina → Rakytovská dolina → Smrekov — marked trail, 12.1 km, 985 m of ascent, approx. 4 h 10 min up / 3 h 20 min down, difficulty: moderate to demanding
• Kráľova studňa → Sedlo pod Smrekovom → Smrekov — 2.1 km, 171 m of ascent, approx. 45 min each way, difficulty: easy

Practical information

• Salaš Smrekovica on the summit ridge is a so-called 'útulňa' — a converted shepherd's hut offering basic overnight accommodation for hikers who don't need comfort.
• A short marked branch trail leads directly to the summit from the main path running along the southern slope.

Smrekov is a natural stepping stone for a longer ridge walk towards Krížna — and with Salaš Smrekovica waiting at the top, there's every reason to stay the night and catch the morning views over the Veľká Fatra.
