Śmielec (1424 m a.s.l.) is a rugged granite peak on the Silesian Ridge of the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains) — less crowded than Śnieżka, but equally atmospheric and well worth the climb. A boulder-strewn summit, open ridge views and a location right on the Polish-Czech border make it a rewarding destination.

The peak is built from typical Karkonosze granite, and its top is covered by a wide field of boulders gradually being reclaimed by dwarf mountain pine. The ridge offers views across to the Czech side of the Giant Mountains and down into the surrounding valleys. Summer brings lush greenery and clear skies, autumn turns the dwarf pines and grasses golden, while winter wraps the ridge in snow and sharp wind — expect proper mountain weather. Both the Polish Karkonosze National Park and the Czech KRNAP protect this area, so the wilderness feels genuine.

• Red trail (Main Sudeten Trail) — running along the ridge from Szklarska Poręba to Karpacz, moderate difficulty

• The summit lies within Karkonosze National Park — staying on marked trails is mandatory
• The Polish-Czech border runs close to the summit; the peak itself is on the Polish side
• Wielki Szyszak lies just to the west (separated by Przełęcz pod Śmielcem pass) and Czeskie Kamienie to the east — easy to combine into a ridge walk

An interesting historical twist: until after World War II it was Śmielec itself that carried the name 'Wielki Szyszak' — the names of these two neighbouring peaks were swapped during post-war map polonisation, while the Czech and German names remained unchanged.
