Skalná Alpa (1,463 m a.s.l.) is one of the most distinctive peaks in the Veľká Fatra mountains of Slovakia — a sharp, rocky ridge with a wild character and some of the finest panoramic views in the entire range. If you enjoy summits that feel genuinely earned, this one is for you.

The peak rises dramatically as a pronounced crest of limestone and dolomite over a granite base. The slopes dropping towards the Blatná valley are exceptionally steep and cut by deep gullies. Near the top, dwarf pine takes over, while lower down you'll find alpine meadows and, further still, ancient mixed forests of spruce, fir, beech and sycamore maple. The summit view rivals that of neighbouring Rakytov and ranks among the best in Veľká Fatra — slightly more intimate, but no less impressive. In winter, large cornices form along the ridge, typically overhanging towards the east, and the grassy eastern slopes carry an avalanche risk.

• Most of the massif is protected as the 'Skalná Alpa' nature reserve (524.5 ha, established 1964).
• In winter, watch for snow cornices on the ridge and avalanche risk on the eastern slopes.
