Skalka is one of those Low Tatras peaks where the reward far outweighs the effort — a nearly 360-degree panorama unfolds from a modest 1,549 m summit above the village of Liptovská Lúžna. It's a great choice for hikers who love ridge walking with a view.

The ridge and summit of Skalka are covered in alpine grassland with only sparse, low vegetation, which is exactly what makes the views so open here. On a clear day you can spot the surrounding Low Tatras peaks and the neighboring Veľká Fatra, as well as the Western Tatras, Chočské vrchy, Oravská Magura, the Beskids, Malá Fatra, and the Kremnica and Veporské mountains. In summer it's a paradise for panorama-hunters and long ridge traverses, while in winter the exposed, wind-swept terrain calls for more caution and experience.

How to reach the summit

• Donovaly — red trail (Cesta hrdinov SNP) via Hiadeľské sedlo and Veľká Chochuľa, longer route, moderate difficulty
• Chabenec — red trail via Sedlo pod Skalkou, from the northeast
• Liptovská Lúžna — yellow trail via Sedlo pod Skalkou, from the north
• Ráztoka — blue trail via Košarisko, from the south

• The historic Cesta hrdinov SNP (Route of the SNP Heroes) trail runs across the summit

The name Skalka ('little rock') fits well — rocky outcrops along the ridge contrast with gentle grassy slopes, a landscape typical of the Ďumbierske Tatry.
