Pröller (1,048 m) is one of the most popular peaks in the Bavarian Forest, rising above the villages of St. Englmar and Kollnburg. It offers a rewarding mix of scenic hiking in summer and a well-developed ski area in winter — a rare combination that makes it a year-round destination.

On a clear day, the summit cross rewards you with a sweeping eastward panorama stretching from Hohen Bogen and Kaitersberg across the Osser and Großen Arber all the way to Rachel. The landscape is a typical Bavarian Forest blend of dense woodland and open slopes, with the terrain becoming noticeably more open and slightly steeper as you approach the top. In winter, lifts on the western, northern and eastern flanks make Pröller one of the most important ski mountains in the entire Bavarian Forest.

• Hinterwies — via the premium long-distance trail Goldsteig; the route follows the forest edge before heading up along the ski slope to the top; difficulty: moderate
• Parking area at the pass on road St 2139 (north of St. Englmar) — Goldsteig in the opposite direction; the path starts on a forest track and later crosses more open, steeper and uneven ground; difficulty: moderate

• The Pröller summit has been owned by the Straubing section of the Bayerischer Wald-Verein since 1922.
• The Goldsteig, one of Germany's top-rated long-distance hiking trails, crosses the peak between Hinterwies and the St 2139 pass.
• In winter the ski lifts are in operation — check current conditions before your visit.

The first summit cross on Pröller was consecrated in 1923, and old photographs from that ceremony clearly show the peak was once completely tree-free, offering open views in every direction.
