Pozhyzhevska (1822 m a.s.l.) is a striking peak in the Chornohora range of the Ukrainian Carpathians, sitting on the border between Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia oblasts. Tucked between Breskul to the northwest and Dancer (Dantsyzh) to the southeast, it rewards visitors with quintessential Chornohora scenery — open alpine meadows, rugged rocky cliffs and hidden mountain lakes.

The western slopes of Pozhyzhevska drop away in steep, rocky escarpments that give the peak a wild, dramatic edge. Just south of the summit lie two small high-altitude lakes, including the Upper Lake — a perfect spot to pause and take in the surroundings. The saddle between Pozhyzhevska and Dancer is the lowest point on the entire Chornohora ridge, at around 1725 m. Seasons transform the mountain completely: spring brings flowering alpine meadows, summer offers sweeping views across the whole Chornohora, and autumn drapes everything in golden hues.

How to reach the summit

• From Breskul — red trail, approximately 1 hour, moderate difficulty
• From Dancer (Dantsyzh) — red trail, approximately 1 hour, moderate difficulty

• At 1550 m on the Pozhyzhevska polonyna, you will find a snow-avalanche weather station and the Biological Station of the Institute of Ecology of the Carpathians — a useful landmark on the route.
• Near the summit, a pre-World War II border marker (post no. 37) marks the former Polish-Czechoslovak frontier — a small but fascinating historical detail along the trail.

The research station on Pozhyzhevska polonyna dates back to 1899, making it one of the oldest mountain research sites in the Carpathians — the building itself was established in 1901 at the initiative of botanist-agronomist Dr. Ignacy Shyshylovych.
