Poludnica (1549 m a.s.l.) is one of those rewarding peaks in the Low Tatras that offers a sweeping 360-degree panorama without the crowds of more famous summits. Rising above the village of Závažná Poruba, roughly 6 km south of Liptovský Mikuláš, it is a brilliant day-hike destination in the heart of Slovakia's mountain heartland. The name itself carries a charming story that locals have told for generations.

The ridge and summit are draped in low vegetation, keeping the views wide open in every direction. On a clear day you can pick out the peaks of the High Tatras, the Chočské vrchy, Oravská Magura, the Orava Beskydy, and both the Malá and Veľká Fatra ranges. The mountain sits between the dramatic Jánska dolina valley to the east and the Iľanovská dolina to the west. In summer the summit feels airy and peaceful; in winter a blanket of snow transforms it into a classic Low Tatras winter landscape.

• The massif is part of the Low Tatras National Park — stay on marked trails at all times.
• The summit ridge forms the boundary of the Jánska dolina National Nature Reserve; the south-eastern slopes are under strict protection.

Old Liptov highlanders gave Poludnica its name because they noticed that when the sun reached directly above its peak, it was exactly noon — 'poludnie' in Slovak. A lovely detail to reflect on while standing on top.
