Palenica Kościeliska (1,183 m a.s.l.) is the highest peak of the Gubałówka Foothills — a gentle, forested ridge stretching west of Zakopane. It may not rival the Tatra giants, but it rewards visitors with peaceful trails, authentic highland village scenery, and a welcome escape from the crowds.

The summit and its uppermost slopes are covered in dense forest, making the hike pleasantly shaded in summer and wonderfully atmospheric in winter. Lower down, the wooded belt gives way to open meadows and the scattered farmsteads of Dzianisz on the northern side and Kościelisko on the southern side. Several streams flow from its slopes — Butorowski Potok and Wielki Głęboki Potok to the south, and Kijów Potok and Golów Potok to the north. Keep an eye out for Groników Pond on the northern slopes, a quiet spot easily missed by those who rush.
