Niebieska Turnia is a striking rocky tower rising to 2262 m along the eastern ridge of Świnica, tucked away from the crowds and mostly known to climbers rather than casual hikers. It's a place for those who want to step slightly off the beaten path in the High Tatras.

The surroundings are wild and dramatic — the northern slopes drop into the Mylna Kotlinka basin within the Dolina Zielona Gąsienicowa valley, while the southern side falls to the glacial cirque of Dolinka pod Kołem in the Valley of Five Polish Lakes. The upper slopes on both sides form steep rock walls crisscrossed with climbing routes. In summer, hikers on the famous Orla Perć trail pass just below the summit, feeling the exposure typical of this high mountain ridge. In winter, the peak becomes a serious, demanding objective.

How to reach the summit

• From Niebieska Przełączka Wyżnia (western side) — the easiest approach, about 10 minutes, but still a demanding climbers' route
• The Orla Perć trail (red trail) crosses a gully below the summit, though reaching the top itself requires leaving the marked path

Practical information

• The eastern side is cut by an almost 40-metre drop, usually descended by rope rappel
• On 21 May 2018, a rockfall destroyed a section of the red trail between Świnica and Zawrat, closing the route until 19 May 2021
• This stretch of the Orla Perć trail is now one-way only, hikers move solely from Zawrat towards Świnica

Despite its name meaning 'Blue Tower', it has nothing to do with color — it's named after a highlander surname, Niebies. The first summer ascent was made in 1907 by Zofia Kordysówna, Zygmunt Klemensiewicz and Roman Kordys.
