The Montscheinspitze is the highest and one of the most beautifully shaped peaks of the Vorkarwendel range in Tyrol. Its striking, well-defined silhouette makes it a rewarding goal for experienced mountain hikers looking for a real challenge in this part of the Alps.

On its northern side lies the Schleimskar, a small karst basin with a tiny mountain lake, flanked by steep ridges to the east and west. The summit offers wide views over the rugged, rocky landscape of the Vorkarwendel, with an atmosphere that feels remote and wild, especially outside the main summer season when the trails see few visitors. The terrain is demanding throughout - this is not a casual walk but a route for sure-footed, experienced mountaineers.

How to reach the summit

• Pertisau via the Gerntal - eastern approach, demanding, requires experience and a good head for exposed terrain
• Hagelhütten (1077 m) in the Rißtal via the Plumsjochhütte, the Plumsjoch (1921 m) and the Montscheinsenke - southern approach, demanding

Practical information

• Both approaches include sections of grade I and II difficulty on the UIAA scale, with exposed, accident-prone spots requiring caution
• The Plumsjochhütte lies along the southern route and makes a good stop before continuing the climb

The name Montschein comes from the Romance word monticinu, meaning small mountain pasture, and has nothing to do with the German word Mondschein (moonlight) - though the peak has often been mistakenly called Mondscheinspitze in older literature.
