Lučenec (1,041 m a.s.l.) is a rewarding summit in the northern part of Veľká Fatra, just 9 km east of Martin. Its position on the edge of the range and the open, patchy vegetation near the top make it a surprisingly great viewpoint for its modest elevation.

The peak rises above the village of Sklabinský Podzámok, along a side ridge running westward from Jarabiná (1,314 m). The surroundings are pleasantly varied — the south-western slopes open up into mountain meadows, while the Kantorská and Sklabinská valleys frame the massif from the north and south respectively. From the top, you can take in a wide sweep of the neighbouring Veľká Fatra peaks, a large part of the Turiec Basin, and the Žiar mountain range. In autumn the hillsides blaze with colour, and the meadows bloom generously in spring — making this a lovely destination across the seasons.

• Sklabina — green trail, then turning onto the yellow trail in the Sklabinská valley; the path forms a loop starting at the 'Medzi mníchmi' junction, crossing the summit of Lučenec, and finishing at the 'Na jame' junction where it connects with the blue trail; moderate difficulty.

• The peak lies within the buffer zone of the Veľká Fatra National Park.
• The loop trail means you do not need to retrace your steps back to the start.

An interesting natural detail: the ridge of Lučenec sits on a watershed — streams from the northern slopes drain via Kantorský potok into the Váh river, while those from the south flow via Sklabinský potok into the Turiec.
