Javorník (684 m a.s.l.) is a charming summit in the Ještěd Nature Park near Liberec, and it comes with a genuine surprise at the top: a hotel shaped like a giant barrel. It is the kind of place that rewards a modest hike with a memorable destination.

The peak forms a broad, gently domed ridge rising above the gorge valley of the Mohelka river. The north-western slopes are covered with well-preserved mixed forests of beech, fir, spruce and sycamore maple — especially beautiful in autumn colours. Partial views open up from both the north-western and south-eastern flanks towards the surrounding hills and basins. In winter the northern slopes transform into a busy recreational hub, complete with ski runs, a bobsled track and a chairlift.

How to reach the summit

• Záskalí (bus stop at the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk) — red and blue trail, the easiest and fastest ascent, difficulty: easy
• Hodkovice nad Mohelkou — green trail, approx. 4.5 km, passing the hamlet of Žďárek and the sandstone ridge of Kozí brada, difficulty: moderate
• Jeřmanice (from the north) — green ridge trail, difficulty: moderate
• Rašovka via Rašovské sedlo — blue ridge trail, difficulty: moderate

Practical information

• The Hotel Obří sud ('Giant Barrel') is open at the summit, reopened on 1 October 2011 after the original burned down in 1974.
• A recreational and sports complex on the northern slopes includes a ski lift, bobsled track and cycling facilities.

The original barrel-shaped wooden structure was brought to the summit from the Vienna Building Exhibition in 1899 — a quirky piece of history that gives Javorník its own unique character among the hills of northern Bohemia.
