Jánský vrch is a quiet, forested summit tucked into the Krkonoše Mountains, part of the lesser-known Žalý ridge. It's the perfect pick for hikers wanting a peaceful walk through dense spruce forest, away from the busier trails of the High Krkonoše.

The summit area is blanketed in an almost unbroken spruce forest, giving the whole hike a cool, hushed, woodland character. Meadows around the mountain huts only appear lower down, on the eastern and western slopes, offering a nice contrast of open pasture views. The western and eastern flanks are notably steep, while the gentler approach comes from the northwest along a roughly 1 km ridge spur. In winter, snow blankets the forest paths and the whole ridge takes on a calm, muffled atmosphere — a great option for a quieter snowshoe walk.

How to reach the summit

• Benecko — green trail 4371 towards Špindlerův Mlýn, moderate difficulty
• Žalý — red-marked Bucharova cesta towards Horní Mísečky, easy to moderate

Practical information

• The summit lies within Krkonoše National Park, so standard nature protection rules apply
• An underground gas pipeline supplying Špindlerův Mlýn runs directly over the summit, followed by a forest road and the red-marked trail
• A non-public paved road connecting Špindlerův Mlýn and Benecko crosses the western slope, but it's closed to hikers and traffic

Despite staying just under 1000 metres, Jánský vrch sits right on the watershed between the Elbe and Jizera rivers — a small but geographically significant spot in the Krkonoše landscape.
