Hutyn Tomnatyk (2016 m a.s.l.) is one of the highest peaks in Ukraine and a hidden gem of the Chornohora range in the Ukrainian Carpathians. Wild, protected, and strikingly beautiful — this summit rewards every hiker who makes the effort to reach it.

The mountain sits entirely within the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, part of the Chornohora protected massif, so the landscape here is pristine and untamed. The slopes are blanketed in subalpine and alpine vegetation, home to numerous rare and relict plant species shaped by the ancient glaciers that carved this terrain. Just below the summit, tucked into a glacial cirque on the northeast slope at 1801 m, lies Lake Brebenesku — one of the highest glacial lakes in Ukraine. To the south stretches the Brebeneska alpine meadow, while the peaks of Rebra and Brebenesku stand as close neighbours along the ridge. In summer the ridge is alive with wildflowers and the lake reflects the open sky; in autumn the whole massif turns gold and rust.

The nearest villages are Hoverla (Zakarpattia Oblast) and Bystrets (Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast), both serving as practical starting points for the area.

Lake Brebenesku, cradled in its glacial bowl just a short walk from the summit, is one of those views that stays with you — a still, silent sheet of water surrounded by ancient rock and high mountain grass.
