The Hoher Fricken rises to 1,940 m above sea level in the Ester Mountains, part of the Bavarian Prealps, sitting between the Wank and the over 2,000 m Bischof. It's a rewarding, less crowded alternative to the region's more famous peaks, offering a genuine mountain experience without the queues.

The terrain here is classic Bavarian Prealps - rugged ridgelines, dramatic rock faces, and the striking Fricken Cirque (Frickenkar) below the summit, with the lower Niederer Fricken (1,682 m) nearby. Depending on the season, you'll find lush alpine meadows in summer or a quieter, snow-dusted landscape in winter. The route via the Kuhflucht Waterfalls adds real scenic drama, passing the atmospheric Fricken Cave roughly halfway up.

• Oberau — hiking trail, approx. 4 hours, moderate difficulty
• Farchant swimming pool via the Esterbergalm path — approx. 4 hours, moderate difficulty
• Farchant via the Kuhflucht Waterfalls — steeper route, approx. 4 hours, demanding

Practical information

• The Fricken Cave lies roughly halfway up the Kuhflucht Falls route and is worth a short stop
• Since the Farchant railway halt reopened in December 2010, the Munich–Garmisch-Partenkirchen line offers convenient traverse options, such as Farchant – Hoher Fricken – Esterbergalm – Partenkirchen, or Farchant – Hoher Fricken – Oberau

Thanks to the train connections, this summit makes a great one-way traverse hike rather than a simple there-and-back trip.
