Hochschrutte is the highest point of the Plattberg massif in the southern chain of the Ammergau Alps, rising to 2247 m above sea level. This is a peak for those seeking an authentic mountain challenge away from the crowds, rewarded with a sweeping panorama in every direction.

The landscape here is rugged and rocky, characteristic of the limestone Ammergau Alps. The route winds through wild, sparsely traveled terrain, and the summit views take in neighboring peaks and the valleys below. In winter, the nearby subsidiary peak, Große Pfuitjöchl (2196 m), is a popular destination for ski tourers and snowshoers, while Hochschrutte itself remains more of a summer challenge given its demanding terrain.

How to reach the summit

• Lähn (railway station on the Außerfernbahn line) — demanding route with easy climbing sections
• Plansee via Pitzental and Wiesjoch — longer and more strenuous, partly without a marked trail
• Can also be climbed as part of a ridge traverse from or to the Daniel peak

Good to know

• The ascent is demanding and includes easy scrambling/climbing passages
• Route-finding can be tricky — existing trail markings are quite faded and paths are barely visible in places (as of June 2025)
• Mountain experience and good navigation skills are recommended
