Hochplatte is the highest peak of the Ammergau Alps and the highest point in the Ostallgäu district, a striking limestone slab that dominates the surrounding landscape. Its two summits, roughly 200 meters apart, create an unmistakable silhouette visible from afar.

This is a true viewpoint mountain — from the top, hikers are rewarded with a wide panorama over the Ammergau Alps. The terrain is karstic, rocky and rugged, making it a popular destination for summer hiking and, in winter, for ski touring. The eastern summit, though slightly lower at 2079 m, holds the summit cross and is the main target for most walkers.

How to reach the summit

• Kenzenhütte (1294 m) — via Scheinbergalpe and karst terrain on the eastern side, approx. 2.5-3 hours, moderate difficulty
• Via the Fensterl notch and the saddle between Krähe and Hochplatte, then along the western ridge (T4) — with easy climbing sections (UIAA I), secured with steel cables at the trickier spots

• Guidebook times are often optimistic — plan for at least 3 hours for the ascent
• The western ridge route requires scrambling experience and confidence on karst terrain
• The summit lies within the Ammergebirge Nature Reserve
