Hessenstein (878 m a.s.l.) is a rocky gem tucked away in the Bavarian Forest — a summit that wins you over not with sheer height, but with its rugged character and a surprisingly rewarding wooden cross perched on top. A short adventure that punches well above its weight.

The summit area is shaped by coarse-grained, garnet-bearing gneiss, sculpted over millennia into impressive rounded boulders through a process called spheroidal weathering — giving the peak the feel of a natural open-air sculpture garden. To reach the very top, a bit of easy scrambling over the rocks is required, adding a dash of excitement even for casual walkers. The views open up to the south and west across the ridgelines of the Vorderen Bayerischen Wald. In summer the surrounding forests are lush and green, in autumn they burst into fiery colours, and in winter the snow-dusted boulders create a quietly magical scene.

• Reaching the very top requires easy scrambling over rocks — sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.

Look closely at the gneiss boulders and you may spot deep-red garnets embedded in the rock — a small but delightful geological treasure hiding in plain sight.
