Hennenkobel (965 m a.s.l.) is a rewarding rocky summit in the Bavarian Forest, rising steeply above the town of Zwiesel and offering views that far exceed the effort required to reach it. A large summit cross marks the top, visible from a distance — this is the kind of peak that puts a smile on your face the moment you arrive.

From the rocky summit, the panorama stretches across the Bavarian Forest National Park, the town of Regen, and all the way to Großer Arber, the highest peak in the Bavarian Forest. The terrain is a pleasant mix of forest paths and rocky outcrops near the top. In spring the forest is fresh and fragrant, summer brings welcome shade and cool air at the summit, autumn transforms the beeches into a fiery display of colour, and in winter the rocks wear a quiet coat of snow. A small shelter hut at the summit makes it a comfortable stop in any season.

• Rabenstein — the shortest route, fairly steep, passing through rocky terrain; quick ascent, moderate difficulty.
• Außenried, Regenhütte, Bodenmais or Brandten — alternative, longer and gentler approach routes to Hennenkobel.

• A small open shelter hut (Unterstandshütte) stands at the summit — no warden, no services.
• The summit cross was first erected in 1957 and has been renewed in 1977 and 1998.
• The old quartz mine tunnel on the northwest side of the mountain is closed to visitors — it is at risk of collapse and serves as an important bat habitat.

The former quartz quarry on the northwest slope of Hennenkobel has yielded an astonishing 65 minerals and their varieties so far, including a mineral named 'Zwieselit' after the nearby town of Zwiesel — making this quiet hillside one of the most significant mineralogical sites in all of Germany.
