Hausstein is a modest but charming 917-metre peak in the foothills of the Bavarian Forest, tucked between the towns of Regen and Deggendorf. It's the kind of local favourite that doesn't make international headlines but rewards visitors with easy trails, gentle views and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere.

The landscape here is classic Bavarian Forest foothill country — rolling slopes, mixed woodland, and open meadows that once served as ski runs. On the eastern side you'll find the remains of two disused drag lifts and their former ski slopes, stretching up to 1,100 metres, part of the wider Deggendorf-Rusel-Hausstein ski and cross-country centre. Since around 2010, the old ski clearing has become a popular launch spot for paragliders, adding a splash of adventure to an otherwise peaceful hill. In winter the slopes can carry a light dusting of snow, while spring through autumn bring green pastures and pleasant forest walks. Rusel village lies just to the north.

A nice bit of local history: the sanatorium built at the foot of the mountain in 1908 was named after Hausstein itself — a reminder that this quiet corner of the Bavarian Forest has long been valued as a place to rest and recover.
